Mount Kazbek
If
you’re a nature lover, a trip to Kazbegi nature reserve is an absolute must. Located
in the stunning Greater Caucasus mountain range, the park is home to the
magnificent Mount Kazbek, one of the highest peaks in Georgia. The area is a
paradise for hikers, offering trails with stunning views of glaciers, valleys,
and the famous Gergeti Trinity Church, which sits at 2,170 meters above sea
level, offering an iconic photo opportunity. The town of Stepantsminda has
plenty to offer thrill-seekers, with horse-riding, paragliding, and treks to
see glaciers and natural mineral springs.
While
you're in Kazbegi, make sure to try khachapuri, delicious Georgian
cheese-filled bread, often served with a raw egg and a dollop of butter on top.
This dish is a hearty comfort food that’s perfect after a day of hiking in the
mountains.
Uplistsikhe
For
history enthusiasts, the ancient rock-hewn town of Uplistsikhe is an unmissable
destination. This ancient city carved into the cliffs dates back to the early
Iron Age and was once a major centre of trade and culture. Walk through its
maze of tunnels, caves, and temples, and marvel at the incredible history
preserved in the landscape.
After
exploring Uplistsikhe, treat yourself to shkmeruli, a rich chicken dish
that’s fried and then cooked in a rich and creamy garlic and milk sauce. This
is classic Georgian comfort food, showing off the bold flavours of the region –
it’s simple, but surprisingly decadent.
Batumi
If
you’re looking for a coastal escape, head to Batumi, a vibrant city on the
Black Sea coast. Known for its palm-lined boulevards, pebbly beaches, and
modern architecture, Batumi is ideal if you want to relax and take it easy, but
still have the option of plenty to see and do.
A
must-see is the Batumi Botanical Garden. It’s one of the largest in the region,
and covers more than 270 acres. The gardens are divided into regions so you can
take a trip around the world through plant life, while admiring the stunning
sea views along the trails. If those sea views appeal, make sure you take a
stroll along Batumi Boulevard – a vibrant green space that curves along the
Black Sea, but also features musical fountains, woodland, and playgrounds for
children if you’re enjoying a family vacation.
Batumi
is also an under-the-radar haven for foodies, with plenty of great restaurants.
If the mention of khachapuri above tickled your fancy, then head to the House
of Adjarian Khachapuri, which specialises in the traditional Georgian dish. The
local speciality is ajarski khachapuri, a regional variation of the
famous cheese bread, where the dough is shaped like a boat and filled with
cheese, eggs, and butter. The boat shape is a nod to the region’s maritime
past, but you can find regional variations from all over Georgia at this rustic
but charming restaurant, which still uses traditional techniques for a taste of
authenticity.

Vardzia
For a
truly unique experience, head to Vardzia, a 12th-century cave monastery carved
into the cliffs of the Erusheti Mountain. This fascinating complex was once a
thriving religious centre, and it’s still possible to explore the living
quarters, temples, and frescoes that make this place so special. The dramatic
setting and rich history makes Vardzia one of the most captivating places to
visit in Georgia.
If
you’ve tired yourself out exploring the caves, then enjoy a traditional meal of
Khinkali - Georgian dumplings stuffed with a variety of fillings,
including meat, mushrooms, or cheese. The juicy, savoury flavour of the
dumplings is sure to revive you, and the authentic taste of Georgian cuisine is
best enjoyed while looking out over stunning views of mountains and rolling
fields.

Mtskheta
Just a short drive from Tbilisi, the
ancient town of Mtskheta offers a peek into Georgia’s deep Christian history.
As one of the oldest cities in the country, and one of the oldest continuously
inhabited cities in the world, it’s a truly special place to visit.
Mtskheta is home to several UNESCO World
Heritage sites, including the Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, both
stunning examples of Georgian religious architecture.
While you’re here, make sure to try lobio, a flavourful bean stew that’s
often served with cornbread. This dish is beloved throughout Georgia and
perfect for warming up after a visit to this historic town.

Kakheti
No mention of Georgia would be complete
without a visit to Kakheti. This region is famous for producing fine wines, and
is home to plenty of vineyards, wineries, and ancient monasteries that still
hand-craft wines. But Kakheti isn’t just about wine – it’s also home to
beautiful landscapes, beautifully preserved churches, and charming villages.
The Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino is a serene Georgian Orthodox monastery and
nunnery, which offers amazing views of the Caucasus mountains from its
manicured gardens. Or there’s the Alaverdi Monastery, one of the oldest in
Georgia, set on the Alazani River Valley between Akhmeta and Telavi.
For food, try chakapuli, a flavourful lamb or veal dish cooked with herbs,
tarragon, and plums. It’s a national favourite, and a fresh and tangy dish that
captures the best of the region’s farms and wineries.

The Rioni River and Prometheus Cave
Located
in the western part of Georgia, the Rioni River offers some incredible scenery
and outdoor activities, from rafting to hiking. Explore the Prometheus Cave,
one of Georgia’s most famous natural landmarks, known for its dramatic
stalactites and stalagmites.
After
your adventure, treat yourself to a hearty meal of satsivi, a rich
chicken dish served in a walnut and garlic sauce. This dish is one of the stars
of any Georgian feast, and it’s a brilliant showcase of the country’s use of
rich flavours in its cuisine – it’s flavoured with salt, pepper, garlic,
fenugreek, coriander and cinnamon.
Georgia
is a treasure trove of natural beauty, rich history, and exceptional food.
Whether you’re hiking in the Caucasus, exploring ancient rock-hewn cities, or
relaxing on the Black Sea coast, you’ll find an unforgettable experience. And
